What is a Retina Surgeon?

A retina surgeon is a doctor who specializes in ophthalmology and sub-specializes in diseases and surgery of the vitreous, macula and retina. Retina surgeons are ophthalmologists who diagnose and treat diseases of the retina and vitreous using highly technical equipment and testing. They have completed all the requirements and training to become ophthalmologists and have additionally completed a successful two-year surgical fellowship in medical and surgical retina.

Retina surgeons are most often consulted when there is a visual decline that cannot be explained by a problem with the front of the eye (eyelids, cornea or lens) and can no longer be corrected with glasses and/or cataract surgery.

The retina is the layer of specialized nerve tissue that lines the back of the eye and is responsible for helping you to see. Retina surgeons can treat patients either in an office setting or in an operating room, depending on the procedure. Retina Surgeons treat a wide-range of conditions, including macular degeneration, retinal detachment, ocular cancer, macular hole, and diabetic retinopathy.
